Exploring my Major: Jobs

In my search, I found that in the area of writing and becoming an author, 66% of all people in this field were actually self employed. This stood out to me because it really showed that my idea for what I wanna do, which is become an author, is completely possible and many would agree. This means I don’t have to feel like what I’m trying to do is pointless and like I have to specifically go into some sort of company to do their writing to make anything useful out of my degree. The usefulness of my degree has always worried me, such as the fact of how realistic is my major for the real world? But I was uplifted by these statistics which showed that I do have opportunities in my own field.

The amount of high level jobs that value an English came to a surprise to me. Being able to apply to be an Architectural and engineering manager jobs and all sorts of other managerial jobs with an English degree shows the importance of my degree. Also it seems that “management occupations” are one of the highest grossing and has one of the highest projected increase in overall employment in the next 10 years when compared to other jobs. About 1.2 million openings are projected to open each year and had a median yearly wage of over $100,000. But not just the high level jobs, some of them were just different than what I would’ve thought an English degree could get you. There are a lot of business oriented jobs that had a large turn out for English degree majors going into them, such as “Accountants and Auditors”, “Budget Analysts”, and many more.

One occupation listed under “Arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations” is the “Art Director.” This person helps manage a team of artists to create and visualize the image of a certain client(s) idea to an audience. They approve or deny the work of artists and curate specifically to an overall design. These people work with advertising and public relations, publishing, and movie production, as well as video games, and make budgets and timelines for projects, and even work with theater groups and movie set builders. While this job does require at least 5 years of prior experience in a simile field of creative arts or a masters degree, in the “similar occupations” tab was my specified field of “Writers and Authors.” I could also become an Art Director by working at least 5 years in my occupation if I wanted to, which is an interesting avenue I could decide to go down later in my life. This kinda adds to the amount of opportunities my major really opens up to me when I graduate.
